Doctors and laboratory diagnosticians after the meeting

On June 6, a joint meeting of the Presidium of the NRL and the Presidium of the KRDL was held.

As reported, the participants of the meeting focused, among others, on the importance and principles of providing diagnostic services in the field of laboratory consultations and the contribution of laboratory diagnosticians to preventive and health-promoting activities.

- The lack of formal diagnostic advice means that the laboratory diagnostician is excluded from contact with the patient, despite having a real impact on the quality of healthcare. This is a loss for the system, for the specialist - and above all for the patient. The introduction of diagnostic advice is a step towards modern, interdisciplinary medicine, based on dialogue, knowledge and responsibility - said the president of KRDL Monika Pintal-Ślimak, presenting the history and main challenges of her profession.

In turn, the president of the National Medical Council, Łukasz Jankowski, drew attention to the aspects that connect doctors and laboratory diagnosticians, starting from medical studies.

- Closer cooperation between doctors and laboratory diagnosticians is necessary. I believe that strengthening these relations would be beneficial for both parties, and above all for patients. In our professions, common elements of knowledge and experience create a solid foundation for effective diagnostics and therapy. On the other hand, differences in the scope of responsibility or competences are a complement that strengthens the quality of patient care - assessed President Jankowski.

As a result, both parties to the meeting agreed to jointly develop an "intra-hospital cooperation" scheme that will serve doctors and laboratory diagnosticians, aimed at improving communication and coordination of activities in medical facilities.

The issue of professional responsibility and applicable legal regulations were also raised, including those concerning the composition of the hospital infection control team. In particular, the provisions of the Regulation of the Minister of Health of 27 May 2010 were explained, which specifies that the head of such a team may only be a doctor.

KRDL representatives expressed hope that in the future it would be possible to consider changing the regulations that would also allow laboratory diagnosticians to act as team leaders, which would enable better coordination and use of their specialist knowledge.

The medical council emphasised the invaluable role of laboratory diagnosticians as an integral part of the teams – as well as their commitment and competence in the field of infection control.

At the same time, he pointed out that due to professional responsibility and the need to ensure patient safety, the function of team leader should remain solely with doctors who are responsible for overall health care.
